These stone statues are from the Island of Sumba Indonesia and are hand carved from sandstone by local artisans. In the traditional villages of Sumba, statues like these are placed inside and around the entrance of the hut providing protection and healing to the occupants inside.
Sumba statues are deeply spiritual, serving as a tangible, sacred vessel in the Marapu ancestor-worship religion of Sumba, Indonesia. They are believed to house ancestral spirits, acting as guardians that protect homes, bring good luck, and maintain balance between the human and spirit worlds.
Each statue is unique. No two statues exactly the same.
